Computer Technology and Digital Life

Dufva, Tomi and Dufva, Miki. “Grasping the future of the digital society.” Futures, vol. 107, 2019, pp. 17-28.

The contemporary lifestyle is inseparable from advanced technology applied in the various aspects of it. Progress permeates all areas of society, turning science fiction into reality as people become widely dependent on the use of technology. According to Tomi and Miki Dufva, this trend is expected to persist and even become stronger in the coming years (18). The digitalization of society is enabled by the strong advantages of automation and computerization across industries. Higher capacities of modern appliances help specialists run complicated calculations and simulations aiming at solving an array of issues. People can now accomplish more tasks in a shorter period and even work from home while retaining a similar level of productivity. However, while technology facilitates knowledge, it is also associated with concerns regarding data protection. The use of technology should be careful, and its implementation is to be limited to ensure progress while maintaining confidentiality.

The society of the 21st century lives in a digital world where technology has developed to a significant degree. Today’s digitalized sphere is immensely broad, encompassing regular smartphones and computers while extending to such important frameworks as home security. However, the progress in some areas may be unnecessary, creating redundant inventions which barely facilitate people’s lives. Furthermore, an average person remains connected to the global network most of the time, and even large amounts of work are now done via the Internet. In such circumstances, it becomes difficult to maintain confidentiality as people share a colossal amount of personal information with different companies, including, for example, target advertisers. Gunn believes that digitalized society requires a new set of ethics to remain convenient. People should enhance their knowledge of technology and learn the safer and more reliable ways of implementing its advancements in everyday life.
