Nursing Theory: A Vital Foundation for Nursing Practice and Patient Care

Nursing theory is very important for the nursing profession and nurse practitioners in particular. While the nursing profession substantially relies on specific personal characteristics such as kindness and compassion, the nursing theory provides a foundation for nursing practitioners’ professional development. Thus, nursing theory is essential for the development of nurses’ professional skills and establishing communication with other professionals, patients, and their families. Nursing theory informs nurse practitioners’ practices because it explains the evidence basis for the practices and scientific reasons behind nursing interventions. Therefore, without understanding nursing theory, nursing practitioners can cause harm to the health of the patient through wrongful actions.

I believe that nursing theory is important for nursing practitioners because it provides guidance in their practice. Incoherent actions aimed at improving the patient’s condition can cause confusion in the treatment process and even cause adverse health outcomes. With an appropriate theoretical basis, nurses can do the right things exactly as required and increase the quality of healthcare services. Furthermore, nurses constantly interact with patients and therefore present an important link in the patients’ relationships with the healthcare providers and the healthcare system. By using the right practices, nurses can develop trustful relationships with patients and increase their trust in healthcare system employees. Furthermore, nurses play an important role in the health education of patients (Whitehead, 2018). Nurses’ communication with patients can be used to inform patients about health issues and increase their awareness about important health topics, such as the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and a nutritious diet. Thus, nursing theory is important for the nursing practitioner because it ensures high quality of healthcare services and establishes more trustful communication with the patients.
