Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse

Introduction

Medical practice implies knowledge and the use of many competencies to ensure the highest quality of work. For a better understanding of what is included in the practice of nurse practitioners, it provides consulting with specialists who have experience in this field. Thus, this work was based on an interview with nurse Sharon Molak, who provided valuable insight and essential lessons that can be useful for students. The main purpose of this task is to gain knowledge about the scope of practice, the necessary requirements, and essential aspects of the nurse practitioner’s activities.

Summary of Interview

The interview was conducted with Sharon Molak, who runs advanced practice registered nurses. During this interaction, the specialist talked about her work background and how she moved from working in the hospital office setting as a nurse practitioner (NP) to working in a single setting in emergency care. She points out the importance of educating individuals so that they can make informed decisions and be aware of the different ways of treatment they receive. To limit the impact of stress in the workplace, Molak pays attention to her quiet, lonely time. Sharon Molak gives valuable advice to those who aspire to become advanced practice registered nurses (ARNPs) who are looking to enter the field of family practice. She highlights that clinical and hospital practice are like two different languages; thus, young specialists should carefully choose what they specifically want. In addition, she warns that when working in patient care, it is important to be patient, attentive, and responsible. This is due to the fact that this process includes many procedures that require careful study, examination, and confirmation by other specialists.

Organization Description

During the interview, the respondent was not told in which specific organization ARNPs work. At the same time, the medical worker replied that she had been working for a long time in a hospital setting in outpatient surgery. Then, Molak decided to go to work in a clinical setting as an adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioner. The woman noted that she prefers to work in family care and does not like pediatrics. Thus, it can be concluded that the main population of nurses are patients aged 18 and over. Regarding colleagues, Molak noted that to improve the interaction and outcomes of their activities, they develop a network of colleagues.

In the state of Florida, it is necessary to have a master’s degree certificate in a nursing specialty area and national advanced practice certification from an approved nursing specialty board. APRNs are required to have an “active Florida RN license or an active multistate RN license from another jurisdiction” (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, n.d.). Last but not least is the provision of malpractice insurance or exemption (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, n.d.). The interview does not specify the specific requirements that APRNs must have in addition to higher medical education.

Scope of Practice

The scope of practice of NPs in all states has no significant differences and implies the implementation of specific actions. Hence, these specialists should be able to diagnose patients, depending on their complaints and symptoms, and prescribe appropriate treatment. Moreover, nurses should prescribe various medications according to the supervising physician. It is worth noting that depending on the work and professionalism of a medical specialist, different levels of supervision by a physician are possible, and nurses should know precisely what actions they have the right to perform independently.

Professional Organizations

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners is one of the leading organizations available for membership. It provides an opportunity to receive the most up-to-date information about the field of medical professionals and advancements and the changes that occur in it (Wiesen, n.d.). Another organization may also be The International Family Nursing Association, which also focuses on improving the quality of services provided through continuous NP training.

Required Competencies

The main NP competencies were allocated by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Among these indicators are the scientific foundation, policy and practice inquiry, technology and information literature, health delivery system, and independent practice, which will ensure compliance with regulatory and scientific knowledge (NONPF’s NP role core competencies, n.d.). In addition, competencies include leadership, quality, and ethics, which are critically important when working with people. They are of critical importance due to the fact that they indicate the main aspects that will contribute to the most effective and productive practice and interaction of employees. This circumstance will significantly improve the quality of healthcare services and the best medical decision-making process.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the interview has become a valuable source of information regarding the work of a nurse. In addition, knowledge was gained regarding the practice and the necessary competencies of medical specialists, which are valuable for acquisition. Separately, it is important to highlight professional organizations and regulatory and legal requirements for specialists. These aspects contribute to improving the quality of healthcare services and increasing patient satisfaction.
