Complexities in Leadership Theories and Perspectives

Introduction

The organizational issue under the description in the chapter is leadership. The piece delves into various aspects and forms of leadership and its effectiveness in the modern workplace. Furthermore, the chapter seeks to detail some of the changes leadership underwent over time and the way influential leaders should act in the present day. The author inspects leadership from the perspective of various theories postulated by different scholars, including scientific management theory, classical management theory, Weber’s bureaucracy, Barnard’s leadership theory, Herzberg’s two-factor theory, decisions theory, systems theory, and many more. The writer discusses these theories under broader cognitive, integrative, and behavioral perspectives to discuss the global changes that continue to occur in leadership styles.

Discussion

There are numerous problems identified in the chapter concerning organizational leadership. Most significantly, the author laments that recent decades have seen to the emergence of several complex and confusing ideas regarding the functions and roles of a leader and a manager (Culture: Theoretical and Organizational Issues, n.d.). According to him, many varied conceptual models and theories are available concerning organizations today, including those mentioned above, like transformational, cognitive, integrative, and behavioral perspectives. According to the chapter, there seems to be confusion about organizational structure and leadership. The organizational analysis, leader’s roles, and manager’s functions differ vastly in most current theories, leading to confusion in contemporary literature.

I believe there is no definite solution to address the problems regarding different perspectives on leadership globally. An approach may prove effective in another part of the world yet come undone in a different organization elsewhere. Other cultures may appreciate or respond more readily to different leadership styles. As such, leaders and managers should always undertake to understand their employees and their cultures and traditions. Thus, leaders should strive to be culturally aware of the people they lead. S/he should demonstrate a willingness to alter their leadership styles to suit the people they lead after interacting with them and finding out who they are as people.

In their quest, leaders and managers should develop a broad comprehension of the different leadership theories and perspectives espoused in the chapter and develop mastery in their implementation in organizations. Furthermore, addressing the issue of contrasting leadership formats demands that one researches the people they lead to understand the styles that seem to work best for them, wherever they go, to offer management and leadership. In other instances, it is essential to blend various leadership styles in an organization as the leader deems fit and suitable. Hence, adopting a more flexible attitude when implementing leadership in an organization is critical.

Conclusion

In my opinion, leaders have the unique mandate of changing, managing, and creating cultures. I believe that leadership entails the influencing and coordination of work activities of an organization. As such, leaders are primarily responsible for the issues in their organizations and under their watch. In the end, such portends severe complications in the criminal justice system. For instance, when an organization releases substances into the atmosphere that cause harm to surrounding communities, I am of the opinion that the leaders will be guilty of lawsuits and legal pursuits since they failed to institute measures to prevent such malpractices. Hence, as the old adage goes, the buck stops with the leaders in the event of criminal proceedings. Did the leaders ensure adherence to safety protocols? Were there clear standard operating procedures to follow, and did the employees undergo training to implement them effectively? Thus, the leader faces much criminal liability in the event of malpractice in their organization since they are the ones to ensure safe cultures and working conditions on their premises, in my opinion.
